PRESS RELEASE

The arrest of the chief deputy property appraiser is an unfortunate situation for everyone involved, especially the taxpayers. Even more disturbing, the inappropriate activity that took place in the Property Appraiser's office was allowed to occur, and the current Property Appraiser did not take any responsible action to correct it on his own. The citizens of Brevard County deserve honest and trustworthy representation by their elected officials and have the opportunity to not allow this to happen again.

When elected Property Appraiser, I intend to restore equitable and fair valuations to all properties in Brevard County. Without fair appraisals and valuation, taxation is disproportionate and citizen confidence in government fails. Even if favors are provided to a selected few and the average impact to each honest taxpayer is negligible, it is WRONG. Local governments depend on property value information to plan their annual fiscal requirements and deserve professional and dedicated service from all supporting government offices, including the Property Appraiser.

I have worked as a public servant in the Clerk of Court's office for twenty-five years. Eighteen of those years, I have served as the County's Chief Financial Officer. Managing the County's financial records and fiscal resources demands great responsibility, accountability and trust.

Again, do not let the opportunity to put good and honest people in public office pass by. Pay attention to each candidate's qualifications to prevent these types of misdeeds from occurring again.

Steve Burdett is the current appointed Chief Financial Officer of Brevard County, a Certified Public Accountant and a candidate for Brevard County Property Appraiser.
